Review of 8659ba25..be987fbb:
- Usage: a Free account answers premium_interactions {entitlement: 0, remaining: 0,
percent_remaining: 0, unlimited: false, has_quota: false}, which read as 100% used. The parser now
returns null when has_quota is false or the entitlement is not positive, with that payload as a
fixture. Free meters chat (200) and completions (2000) too, so the comment no longer says they
are unlimited on every plan.
- agent read: rows were skipped until a `❯ <prompt>` row, so an answer taller than the pane
(prompt scrolled off the top) read as "". With no prompt row AND no banner / trust dialog on
screen, the rows above the composer are now the tail of the last answer. Text typed in the
composer (a prompt-shaped row between the two rules) is not a prompt row.
- Page keys: measured on 1.0.95 in tmux that Copilot pages on PageUp/PageDown (three PageUp moved
lines 109-140 to 010-042, PageDown returned) as well as on SGR wheel reports, so copilot joins
claude and opencode in _localScrollbackIsHollow(); the stale-tracking-flag fallback the comment
and docs describe is now true, for the main pane and a TerminalTile (same function), with tests.
- X-GitHub-Api-Version is 2022-11-28, a version GitHub supports (verified against the live
endpoint); readPlanUsageTelemetryEnabled() is checked before isCopilotAvailable() so a switched-off
chip skips the resolver probe too.
- Palette label for Copilot in panels-ui.js; stale comments in types/session.ts and stock.ts.
- Docs: Past Sessions continues with --continue (resumeSessionId is for API callers), nothing sets
continueSession on a respawn, and only a tab name the user set is passed as --name; the usage
wording for Free; the wheel and mouse-strip paragraphs in CLAUDE.md and
architecture-invariants; the changeset describes the whole feature.
Copilot's TUI turns mouse tracking on itself. Under `strip-mux-only` those DECSETs reached
xterm, which then reported a plain drag to the TUI instead of selecting (only Shift+drag
selected), so Auto Copy and copy-on-select did nothing. This is the failure opencode had and
`strip-mux-and-mouse` was added for: the DECSETs are stripped, a drag is a local selection and
clicks still reach the CLI through the browser's hand-encoded tap (`cliMouseTracking`).
Stripping them also stops xterm from encoding the wheel for the CLI, so
`_shouldForwardWheelToApp` now forwards it as SGR reports while Copilot is tracking the mouse
(the same bytes xterm sent natively, which is what scrolling was verified against). Shift+wheel
stays on local scrollback and a stale flag falls back to PageUp/PageDown.
Tests: the strip flavor for copilot (stripped DECSETs, 3J kept, cliMouseTracking, direct-PTY
untouched) and the wheel gate (forwards while tracking, no other non-claude mode changes).
xterm parses write() data after chunkedTerminalWrite has already cleared
_isLoadingBuffer, so the main terminal's replay gate never held: a tab switch
or reconnect re-copied the newest OSC 52 in the replayed history. Strip every
OSC 52 from the replay beside the DEC 2026 markers (OSC52_STRIP_RE). Tiles
keep their own _bufferLoading gate, which holds there.
One Claude Code copy arrives up to three times (its own OSC 52, tmux
load-buffer -w, set-clipboard forwarding), so identical text within
OSC52_DEDUPE_MS is dropped. The manual-copy fallback opens only in the
focused tab, so a background tab on the same session stays quiet.
The replay tests now drive the real chunkedTerminalWrite into
@xterm/headless and fail without the strip. Test harnesses that supply
DEC_SYNC_STRIP_RE by hand get OSC52_STRIP_RE too, and CLAUDE.md records
the rules next to Auto Copy.
pageKeysForGesture kept `prepaid` set after the travel had fully repaid a
pre-paid page, so the one-second debt lifetime still applied: on a 38-row
pane, 19 lines of -1 at 32 ms left { pending: 0, prepaid: true } and a -1
300 ms later sent nothing. `prepaid` now clears as soon as the pending
travel reaches or crosses zero, so the leftover is plain travel and the
150 ms gap applies again. Touch contacts are unaffected (never split by
time). The mixed parity step's reversal grows from 20 to 25 rows because
the -5 rows left after repayment are now plain travel and cancel against it.
Review of #527 (Ark0N, 2026-10-11):
1. A slow touch drag paged a full screen per line. touchmove calls the
fallback once per whole cell, so a slow drag's calls were further apart
than the 150 ms gesture gap and each pre-paid a page (12 lines at 170 ms
sent 12 PageUps). The touch paths now tag every call, touchmove and
momentum frames alike, with a per-contact touchId (incremented on
touchstart), and pageKeysForGesture never splits a contact by time; a
new contact is a new gesture.
2. A pre-paid debt now survives up to PAGE_KEY_DEBT_MS (1 s) of quiet when
the next event goes the same way, so slow small wheel ticks (40 px every
250 ms, a Firefox 1-line notch) pay it back instead of each pre-paying.
A reversal inside the gap (or inside one contact) drops the debt and
accumulates without pre-paying, so a +/-3 px wobble no longer pages
back and forth. A reversal after the gap still pages at once. Main pane
and tiles share the helper, so both get it.
3. A wheel consumed by the dialog check now logs page-keys-dialog-open.
4. The Dashboard wiki names newer Codex beside OpenCode; the invariants
paragraph describes the new gesture boundaries.
Tests: unit regressions through the real _maybePageCliTranscript, helper
cases, tile/main parity for ticks and wobble, and a Chromium test that
drives the real initTerminal touch listeners (12 PageUps before, 1 after).
Review follow-up after the rebase onto 1.40.0, where tiles began paging a
hollow buffer through the shared CodemanTerminalInput helpers and opencode
joined the hollow check (#555).
- opencode declares transcriptPageKeys in stock.ts, so the paging list read
by both panes is claude, codex and opencode. Without it, reading the
capability instead of the old id check would have turned opencode paging
off again. The stock-set and render tests name it.
- The gesture rules (first trackpad-sized event pages at once and is owed
back, wheel notches accumulate, a pre-paid debt dies with its gesture,
pinch and mostly horizontal swipes are consumed without paging) move out
of the primary pane into the pure CodemanTerminalInput.pageKeysForGesture.
The primary pane and TerminalTile both call it with their own state, so a
Codex or opencode tile pages exactly like the main pane.
- The dialog check stays per pane: the primary pane reads tabAlerts for the
active session, a tile for its own sessionId, so a wheel over a tile never
pages into that session's permission prompt while the focused tab is clear,
and a tile is not blocked by a dialog in another tab.
Tests: pure helper cases in terminal-scroll-routing, tile cases for Codex
paging, first-event paging, notch accumulation, pinch and swipe, byte parity
with the primary pane over a mixed sequence, and the per-session dialog
check in both directions.
Review follow-up for the hollow-pane PageUp/PageDown fallback
(_maybePageCliTranscript):
- A mostly horizontal wheel swipe (both deltas present, |deltaX| > |deltaY|)
is consumed without paging. The touch path already locks its axis.
- A pinch (wheel events with ctrlKey, as Chrome reports one) is consumed
without paging.
- Only a trackpad-sized opening event (under 2 rows) pages at once. A wheel
notch (100 px, 4 rows) accumulates toward half a screen as before, so five
slow notches send one PageUp again instead of five. A debt from a pre-paid
page still dies with its gesture; plain wheel travel carries across notches.
- Nothing pages while the active tab's alert is 'action' (a pending
permission_prompt or elicitation_dialog), so a page key never reaches an
open dialog's selector.
Docs: the invariants paragraph now says which Codex versions were seen
drawing on the alt screen (0.157.1, 0.160) and that 0.147.0 still draws
inline, without claiming a cutoff.
Two changes to the last-resort page-key scroll (_maybePageCliTranscript), the
path a wheel or touch gesture takes when it is not forwarded to the CLI and
the local xterm buffer has no history (normal buffer, baseY 0).
Codex now takes that path too. Newer codex draws on tmux's alternate screen,
which the full strip hides from xterm, so a codex pane is as hollow as a
repaint-mode Claude pane and the wheel did nothing. Codex still ignores SGR
wheel reports and is still never forwarded the wheel; this sends plain
PageUp/PageDown keys, which codex does page its transcript on (measured on
0.157.1 locally and 0.160 over a remote session). Which modes may page is a
new registry capability, capabilities.transcriptPageKeys (claude and codex in
stock.ts), published to the page as window.__codemanTranscriptPageKeys, so
terminal-ui.js holds no CLI id for it.
The first event of a gesture now pages at once. The fallback used to send a
key only after half a screen of accumulated travel (19 rows, about 475px on a
38-row pane), so an ordinary trackpad flick sent nothing. The skipped travel is
owed back by the rest of the gesture, keeping one page per half screen; a pause
of more than 150 ms, a direction change or a tab switch starts a new gesture.
The primary pane's hollow-buffer paging (#555) and its desktop click report
read this.terminal and this.activeSessionId throughout, so a second pane (a
grid tile, the split's Pane B) could only get them by copying the gates and
their CLI rules. They now take an optional trailing target instead, the
pattern registerFilePathLinkProvider, copyTerminalSelection and
_handleImagePaste already use for tiles:
- _shouldForwardWheelToApp(ev, { terminal, sessionId })
- _localScrollbackIsHollow({ terminal, sessionId, localRows }), where
localRows stands in for baseY so a tile can discount rows it pushed above
the screen itself
- _handleDesktopTerminalClick(ev, { terminal, sessionId, linkHovered }),
_sendSyntheticSgrTap(x, y, target), _shouldReportMouseToCli(sessionId),
_terminalViewportAtBottom(terminal) and _clientPointToCell(x, y, terminal)
Every field left out means the primary pane's, and every existing caller
passes none, so the primary pane behaves exactly as before and its
grep-pinned call sites are unchanged. The mode list for hollow buffers and
the claude >= 2.1.187 forwarding gate stay in terminal-ui.js alone.
The stateless math moves into two pure exports on CodemanTerminalInput,
wheelDeltaLines and pageKeysForTravel, which _wheelScrollLinesFloat and
_maybePageCliTranscript now delegate to. Comments on both sides name the
tile's twins (the page-key pager and the 40 ms coalescer).
Tests: the exports agree with the primary pane's methods and bytes, the gates
read the target's session, buffer, rows and tracking mode rather than the
active ones, and a targeted click uses the target's geometry, selection,
scroll position and link hover.

opencode's TUI runs on the ALTERNATE SCREEN (measured on 1.18.31: tmux
`alternate_on=1`, `history_size=0`), so tmux keeps no history for the pane and
the browser's normal buffer never grows past one screen (`baseY === 0`). The
plain wheel therefore scrolled a buffer with nothing in it — dead in every
opencode tab, on desktop and touch alike.
opencode is not a forwarding candidate: it IGNORES SGR wheel reports (six
`\x1b[<64;…M` reports against an idle pane left the capture byte-identical),
but it does page its own transcript on PageUp/PageDown (`messages_page_up/down`,
verified on the same pane). The hollow-buffer rescue already sends exactly those
keys — it was just gated to `claude`. Widen the gate to opencode so the wheel
and touch gestures reach the CLI's own transcript instead of a no-op.
Every other mode stays out: shell/pi own real terminal scrollback, and
codex/gemini/antigravity/grok/deepseek/omp page-key behaviour is unverified
(docs/scrollback-fix-plan.md).
Test: test/terminal-scroll-routing.test.ts — new opencode case (Red before the
fix, Green after); the "real local scrollback is untouched" case now also pins
antigravity as not-paged.
- _logScrollRouting() reports cliMouseTracking, the gate's new input, in both
the de-dup signature and the console line (xterm's own mouseTracking stays
'none' for Claude, so it gave no reason for a no).
- Restore two guard tests the new gate made vacuous: the local-scrollback
opt-out footgun test and the codex/gemini "no version rescues it" fixtures
now set cliMouseTracking: true, so removing the opt-out or re-adding codex to
the gate fails again.
- Update the comments and architecture-invariants lines that still described
the version-only rule (wheel handler header, gate doc, the false paths of
_maybePageCliTranscript, "holds a tracking mode on continuously").
- Name both fullscreen switches (CLAUDE_CODE_NO_FLICKER=1 and "tui":
"fullscreen" in ~/.claude/settings.json) in the code comment, the invariants
and the two wiki pages.

- Skip and latch a bounded Shell window once the browser is at xterm's
scrollback cap (scrollback + rows): a 1 MiB window of short lines can carry
more rows than the browser can ever hold, so it replayed and re-captured on
every scroll-to-top with no 60 s back-off.
- Label a replayed bounded window 'tail' even when the capture was byte-capped,
so the banner keeps offering Load full history instead of calling the rest
unrecoverable.
- Pin GET /terminal?full=1&tail=<n> in the route tests: full-history source,
truncationReason 'tail', and the closing relative cursor move survive the cut.
- Log the bounded skip via _logScrollRouting('repull-skipped-bounded').

A window cut at the tail size can be smaller than the browser's buffer
while tmux still holds more. The downgrade guard reads that as "tmux has
nothing more to give", which is true of an unbounded capture only, so a
bounded window reaching it marked the session exhausted and removed Load
full history from the banner.
The bounded skip now runs first, so such a window never reaches the
exhausted path, and it no longer writes banner state: relabelling it from
the bounded payload would call a terminal holding all of a Load full
history pull "the most recent 1 MiB".
A skipped window that came back truncated cannot reach anything older
than the browser shows, and every ask costs the server a synchronous
capture-pane of the whole history (tail is applied after the capture), so
it puts the session on the 60 s cooldown. An untruncated one keeps 4 s.
_replayWouldShrinkBuffer takes optional pre-estimated rows so a megabyte
capture is not scanned twice. CLAUDE.md's Full-scrollback replay entry no
longer says Shell never pulls on ordinary scroll.

Closes#259, closes#258. Both bottom out in the same gap: nothing tracked
whether the user was following live output or reading history.
#259 — the keyboard path forced the terminal to the bottom unconditionally
(onKeyboardShow/onKeyboardHide passed scrollToBottom:true, applied with no
check), so opening the keyboard while scrolled up yanked the user down. The
settle cycle now captures intent on its FIRST event, before any fit() has
reflowed the buffer, and returns to that anchor when the user was reading.
A later capture would read an already-moved viewportY, which is why the
capture point matters. The param is renamed restoreScroll to match.
Separately, flushPendingWrites gated viewport preservation on
_hasRecentUserScrollUp(), a 1500ms decay window, so a user who scrolled up and
then actually READ for longer lost protection mid-read. Being scrolled up IS
the intent however long ago it was expressed, so it now keys off position.
The recency window stays as a race guard on the sticky scroll-to-bottom.
The full-history repull already held the user's place and is unchanged.
#258 — truncation was reported by a grey line written INTO the terminal
("earlier output truncated"), which scrolls away with the output it describes,
cannot be acted on, and said the same thing whether the rest was one click away
or gone forever. The server set one `truncated` boolean at two sites meaning
opposite things, and the client discarded fullSize and source entirely.
The route now reports truncationReason ('tail' = intentional partial replay,
the rest is retained; 'capped' = the byte ceiling dropped it) plus
retainedBytes, and 'capped' is not downgraded by a later tail cut. The client
renders a dismissible banner outside terminal output with three honest states:
recoverable (offers Load full history), at-ceiling, and exhausted. The Load
button forces past the scroll cooldown but NOT past _replayWouldShrinkBuffer,
which still refuses a downgrade for repaint-mode panes.
The banner is an overlay, not a flex child: FitAddon derives rows/cols from the
terminal parent's computed height, so occupying real layout space would SIGWINCH
the CLI on every truncation-state change.
Verified in a real browser on the 7 skins: banner text and button clear 4.5:1
contrast on all of them, and terminal height is byte-identical with the banner
shown. The first cut used --bg-elevated and --accent-muted, which do not exist,
so light skins rendered a hardcoded dark bar under dark text; it now uses only
tokens every skin redefines.
test/terminal-scroll-intent.test.ts lives outside test/mobile/ deliberately —
that suite is excluded from test:ci, so a guard placed there is invisible to CI.

The 1.12.0 retest on #205 reported it still broken in two shapes: a wheel that
did nothing at all on Firefox/macOS (while Fn+Up paged back through intact
text), and iPhone history that went back a little, repeated blocks and got
worse the further up it went. Both come from a Claude pane's LOCAL buffer being
hollow: tmux keeps no history for a repaint-mode pane (history_size 0), so
xterm holds only replayed repaint frames.
1. The scroll-to-top full=1 re-pull now refuses a DOWNGRADE. It resets the
terminal and rewrites it from the capture, which is a win when tmux holds
more than the browser, but for a repaint-mode pane that capture is roughly
ONE frame and the rewrite deleted history mid-scroll. Measured A/B on a live
pane, same gesture: guard off collapses 341 rows to 42, guard on preserves
all 341. _replayWouldShrinkBuffer() estimates the capture's rendered rows
(escapes stripped, capture-pane -J re-wrapping accounted for) and skips the
rewrite when it is more than one screen short; a refused session's cooldown
goes from 4s to 60s so a hollow pane stops re-fetching megabytes.
2. A false forwarding gate on a Claude session no longer means a dead gesture.
Under a triple guard (claude mode, gate false, baseY 0), wheel and touch
travel becomes coalesced PageUp/PageDown through the same 40ms queue as the
SGR reports, at half a screen of travel per page key. Shift is excluded: it
keeps meaning "local scrollback".
3. getClaudeCliVersion() no longer caches FAILURE. It stored null on any
exception and guarded on !== undefined, so one timed-out or PATH-starved
probe at the first Claude session start disabled wheel-forwarding for every
Claude session until the server restarted, which fits a report of breakage on
phone, tablet and laptop at once. Success is still cached for the process
lifetime; failures retry with a 1/2/4 up to 15min backoff, and the policy is
a pure function so the semantics are testable without spawning claude.
4. The terminalWheelLocalScrollback footgun is handled by pairing rather than
scoping: the setting keeps meaning exactly what it says, and fix 2 catches
the case where "local" is empty. The App Settings tooltip now says to leave
it off for Claude/Codex sessions.
5. _logScrollRouting() prints one line per session per distinct decision:
forward-sgr / page-keys / local-scrollback / repull-refused-downgrade, with
mode, cliVersion, the opt-out state, mouse tracking and local scrollback
depth. #205 ran two rounds of remote guesswork over questions that line
answers directly.
Verified end to end against a real isolated instance (own data dir and tmux
socket) with real wheel events: forwarding still sends SGR reports, the opt-out
now sends real PageUp/PageDown where the wheel was dead, a tab-switch collapse
(401 rows to 44) is still fully recovered by the re-pull (back to 401), and a
seeded 341-row Claude buffer survives the same gesture that destroys it with the
guard disabled.
